If you answer true more than twice, you should discuss your sleep patterns with your doctor to find out if ASC is right for you.

Sleep disorders are very common. Nearly 40 million American adults suffer from sleep disorders. It is estimated that 30 to 40 percent of adults experience daytime sleepiness severe enough to interfere with daily activities at least a few days each month, with 20 percent reporting problem sleepiness a few days a week or more, according to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF). The NSF reports that fatigue contributes to decreased performance levels at school and work, added stress, and irritability.

What to Expect of a Sleep Study:
After obtaining a referral from your primary care physician to complete a sleep study, you are required to spend the night in the home-like atmosphere of our sleep center.
Bring your own nightclothes, favorite pillow, and any personal belongings that may help you sleep more comfortably. The room has a television and you may bring reading materials.
The technologist will review the procedure your doctor has ordered, and will answer any questions you may have. After changing into nightclothes, the technician attaches electrodes and sensors, which measure breathing, heart rate, respiratory muscles, airflow from the nose and mouth, oxygen levels in the blood, snoring, and body positions.
Your sleep patterns are observed and recorded through an adjacent room equipped with computers and other monitoring equipment. You are able to speak with the technicians at any time throughout the study, and be able to request a drink of water or visit the restroom. You will be awakened the next morning and discharged while the results of your study are analyzed.

After the Study:
Data recorded during the study is compiled by our board-certified polysomnographer, scored, and summarized, then interpreted by the American Sleep Center’s Medical Director. Your primary care physician will receive a quick and accurate interpretation of the study. Your physician will review the results and make appropriate recommendations for treatment.
Then, the staff at ASC will develop a personalized treatment program and provide follow-up services that assist with therapy compliance, and ensure your complete satisfaction.

Children have Sleep Problems, Too
Children with sleep disorders may show symptoms such as excitability, irritability, and difficulty staying focused on tasks or school activities. Children with upper airway restriction may not snore like adults; instead, they may have raspy breathing or sound congested while sleeping.

ASC staff knows it can be scary for a child to undergo medical testing, so we take extra care with them, and answer any questions they may have about the procedures. Plus, it’s comforting to them to have their parent or guardian in the room with them the entire time.
